For most Indian families, the financial shock of a cancer diagnosis arrives alongside the medical one, and it is rarely discussed in the consulting room. Treatment can run to lakhs of rupees, insurance may fall short, and the schemes that exist to help are scattered across departments, hospitals and charities that nobody hands you a map to.
Our navigation service is that map. A navigator sits with you and your family, works out what financial support you may be eligible for and helps you apply for it — and helps you make sense of the hospital process around it: what a report means for the next appointment, when a second opinion is worth seeking, how to keep every document in one place so nothing is repeated.
This is guidance, delivered in a group orientation or a private review with a follow-up. It is not a service that attends appointments for you or takes decisions on your behalf — and it is never medical advice.
What this service is, and what it is not
We provide guidance and navigation. We do not provide funds, loans, insurance or investment advice, and we cannot guarantee that any scheme, grant or fundraiser will succeed — eligibility rules belong to the institutions that run them and change without notice. What we can do is make sure you know every avenue that exists, understand what each one requires, and do not miss a deadline or a document.
Nothing here is financial or legal advice. For decisions about selling assets, borrowing or insurance disputes, we will point you to an appropriately qualified professional.
Government schemes
India has more publicly funded support for cancer treatment than most families realise. Depending on your income, state and hospital, this may include the Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY health cover for eligible families at empanelled hospitals, state chief ministers' relief funds, the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund, the Health Minister's Cancer Patient Fund, and hospital-specific poor-patient funds at government and charitable institutions.
Each has its own eligibility criteria, paperwork and processing time, and several can be pursued in parallel. Your navigator checks the current terms for your situation, helps you assemble the application, and follows up on its progress.
NGO grants and charitable support
A number of established cancer charities and trusts provide treatment grants, medicine support, travel and accommodation help for outstation patients, and support specific to children's cancers. Most require a treating doctor's estimate and income documentation.
We maintain a working knowledge of who funds what, help you approach the right organisation with a complete application, and avoid the common mistake of applying everywhere at once with incomplete papers.
Crowdfunding, done carefully
Medical crowdfunding can raise meaningful sums, and it can also expose a family's most private information to the internet permanently. We help you decide whether it is right for you, set realistic targets, understand platform fees and payout timelines, and write a campaign that tells your story without disclosing medical details you may later regret publishing.
You control what is shared. We never publish anything on your behalf.
Diagnostics, medicines and hospital bills
Beyond the headline treatment cost, families are drained by repeated scans, blood tests and medicines. We connect you with discounted diagnostic networks where available, explain generic medicine options and Jan Aushadhi outlets where appropriate to discuss with your oncologist, and help you read an itemised hospital bill and ask about concessions before paying rather than after.
Navigating the system: appointments and second opinions
Most people leave a consultation having forgotten half of what they meant to ask. In a review we help you prepare: what has changed since the last visit, what you need to decide, which documents to carry, and a written list of questions in the order that matters.
Seeking a second opinion is normal, common and entirely your right. We help you understand when one is worth seeking, what records to collect for it and how to request them from your hospital — and how to have the conversation with your existing team without awkwardness. What we never do is recommend one medical option over another; where a question is clinical, our job is to help you ask your oncologist clearly.
Treatment logistics, admissions and medicines
Chemotherapy cycles, radiotherapy schedules, surgery dates and follow-up scans need sequencing with work, school and family, and admission and discharge paperwork is confusing when you are frightened. We explain what a discharge summary should contain, how to read an itemised bill and ask about concessions before paying, and how to keep reports so nothing has to be re-done.
Prescriptions during treatment can be complex, expensive and time-critical. We help you understand the schedule your doctor has set, find reliable sources for medicines, and know what to ask your oncologist about appropriate generic alternatives.
Working with your treating team
We do not contact your hospital or doctors without your explicit permission. Where you ask us to — collecting reports, clarifying an instruction — we do so on your authority and share only what is necessary. Your treating team remains in charge of your medical care at all times.
Documents worth keeping ready
Almost every scheme and grant asks for a similar core set. Having it assembled once saves weeks.
- Diagnosis report and treating doctor's treatment plan with cost estimate
- Identity and address proof for the patient and the applicant
- Income certificate or proof, and ration or BPL card where applicable
- Hospital registration and, where relevant, empanelment details
- Bank account details for any direct transfer
- Recent photographs and any existing insurance policy documents
Frequently Asked Questions
- Does Oncology Mitra give financial aid directly?
- No. We provide guidance and hands-on help applying to schemes, charities and fundraising platforms. We do not disburse funds, lend money or sell insurance.
- Can you guarantee a scheme or grant will be approved?
- No. Eligibility decisions belong to the institutions that run each scheme and their rules change. We make sure your application is complete, correct and on time, and we follow up on it.
- Is this navigation service included in the programmes?
- Yes — as a group orientation in Mitra Pratham, and as a private review with a follow-up in Mitra Shakti and Mitra Sampoorna. It is included in every programme at no additional charge and is not sold as a separate paid session. There is never a commission or a percentage taken from any funds you receive.
- Can a family member use this service on the patient's behalf?
- Yes. Most families find it easier for a caregiver to handle the paperwork. We will need the patient's permission to discuss their case.
- Do you help with health insurance claims?
- We help you understand your policy, assemble claim documents and follow the process. We are not insurance agents and cannot represent you in a dispute; for that we will point you to the right professional or ombudsman route.
